Tripura: Rape accused sentenced to life imprisonment
Agartala, Dec 6 : A local court in Tripura’s Gomati district on Tuesday convicted Montaj Mia and sentenced him to life imprisonment for his involvement in a brutal rape case in March 2021.
Montaj, a resident of Bagma, Udaipur, in Gomati district, is a listed criminal with a history of cow theft, drug paddling, and anti-social activities for a long time. Montaj Mia had abducted a young lady on her way home from a local market in a car and assaulted her, followed by rape in a nearby forest.
She somehow managed to escape from the clutch and filed a case at Killa police station, on which police arrested him. After a thorough examination of the evidence, including the testimony of 15 witnesses, the investigating officer submitted a charge sheet against Montaj Mia.
The Additional and District Judges Manbendra Debbarma, after a long trial, convicted the accused.
According to the police, the verdict has been widely welcomed, as the villagers suffered due to the terror inflicted by Montaj Mia.
