All three hills of Darjeeling shut to protest murder of a school girl
Darjeeling, Aug 26 : Life in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong districts
was largely affected on Saturday owing to 24-hour shutdown called by
Bimal Gurung led Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and
Ajay Edwards led Hamro Party and the CPRM to protest brutal murder
of a class XI girl in in the plains of Siliguri, West Bengal.
Markets were closed, vehicles were off the roads and educational
institutions and offices were closed.
The weekly markets on the hills were also shut for the whole day.
However, the emergency services were kept out of the purview of the
strike. The inclement weather and monsoon rains also forced
the residents of the hills to remain indoors.
The body of the teenage girl was recovered from a dilapidated house in
the Matigara area on Thursday.
Police have already arrested the
accused,
who tried to sexually assault her but as she prevented the assassin
bludgeoned her to death. The stone with which the girl was smashed
was
recovered from the scene of crime, police added.
The victim was returning home from school, when the accused caught her
and committed the crime.
Police said the accused was a drug addict.
The BJP, which had called a 12-hour shutdown of Siliguri, on Saturday
the took out a rally to protest the crime in the town.
