Acapulco (Mexico), Feb 23 : German tennis player Alexander Zverev was thrown out of the ongoing Mexican Open after “unsportsmanlike conduct” as he attacked the umpire’s chair. The world no.3 argued with the umpire during a doubles tie-break as he and Marcelo Melo of Brazil lost to 2-6, 6-4, 6-10 to British-Finnish pair Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. Zverev, who was the defending champion in the singles event, hit the umpire’s chair several times with his racquet, BBC reported. The German eventually apologised, calling his behaviour “unacceptable”. “Due to unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of his doubles match on Tuesday night, Alexander Zverev has been withdrawn from the tournament in Acapulco,” an ATP stateNIment read. In the singles event, Zverev’s round-of-16 opponent and fellow German Peter Gojowczyk has been given a walkover into the third round. Zverev wrote on Instagram Story that he had “privately apologised” to umpire Alessandro Germani and admitted that he was “disappointed in myself”. “As you know, I leave everything on court. Yesterday, I left too much,” he said. “I am going to take the coming days to reflect – on my actions and how I can ensure that it will not happen again.”
