Bengaluru, June 5: Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu said a lot of youngsters are doing well, but they need to do much more to prove themselves, and one day India would lift the most coveted Uber Cup.
“There is a big gap. But a lot of youngsters are doing well. At the Uber Cup and other tournaments we saw Aakarshi (Kashyap) and Ashmita (Chaliha, whom Sindhu beat in the Indian Open quarterfinals), and a few other players doing well. But they need to do much more to prove themselves. I am sure one day we will win the Uber Cup. We need to have the best players on court and it is important that everybody gives their 100 per cent,” she said on the sidelines of the Grand Prix Badminton League here.
Sindhu is expecting to strike form and remain injury-free in coming weeks ahead of Birmingham Commonwealth Games in July.
“My immediate goal is to play in the Indonesia and Malaysia Masters, besides the Singapore Open leading into the Commonwealth Games. It is not going to be easy, but I am hoping to be in my best form and remain injury-free,” she said.
Sindhu hopes to continue her good form at the Birmingham Games. “My beginning has been good this year. I reached the semifinals at the Indian Open and won the Syed Modi tournament and Swiss Open. I also reached the semifinals at Korean Open and Badminton Asia Championships. It has been decent so far. I hope to continue the good show and wish to win more in days to come,” she said.
After CWG, the World No. 7 will brace up for the World Championships in Tokyo in August.
Sindhu thanked the government’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for the support in her pursuit for glory by saying that it sanctioned the Game Ready equipment as quickly as possible before Tokyo Olympics.
