Mumbai, April 2 : Rajasthan Royals (RR) registered their second win in 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) after defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 23 runs here at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. With their second straight win, RR went on top of the points table. Tilak Verma (61) and Ishan Kishan (54) were the top scorer for Mumbai. While Jos Buttler (100) top scored for Rajasthan. After his century knock against MI, Buttler became the orange cap holder. Chasing 194, Mumbai lost two wickets in quick succession in the form of skipper Rohit Sharma (10) and Anmolpreet Singh (5) within the powerplay. Opener Ishan was then joined by rising star Verma, the duo together contributed 81 runs for the third wicket partnership. In the 13th over, Trent Boult broke the deadly partnership after dismissing Ishan (54). A couple of overs later, Ashwin trapped Verma in his slower ball and gave another big breakthrough to Rajasthan. Then, Yuzvendra Chahal struck in the 16th over and removed Tim David (1) and Daniel Sams (0) in successive deliveries. He almost got Murugan Ashwin on the third ball but missed by a whisker as it was a thick edge and substitute Karun Nair has spilled it and denied a hat-trick to chahal. But in the 19th over, Murugan was runout on no-ball and Jasprit Bumrah joined Pollard. In the final over, MI needed 28 to win with big hitter Pollard on the crease. He hit the first ball for four but Navdeeo Saini’s tight bowling helped RR to successfully defend the total and wrapped up a win. For RR, Saini and Chahal claimed two wickets each. Boult, Prasidh Krishna and Ravichandran Ashwin picked one wicket each. Earlier, riding high on Buttler’s 100 off 68 Rajasthan Royals (RR) posted 193/8 on the board. Put to bat first, RR had a shaky start as Bumrah struck early and dismissed young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply for one in the third over and Tymal Mills got rid of Devdutt Padikkal on the score 7 in the sixth over. Then, skipper Sanju Samson ( 30 0ff 21) joined Buttler and stitched a 53-run partnership for the third wicket, before Samson was sent back by Kieron Pollard in the 15th over. Rajasthan were reeling 130/3. Shimron Hetmyer’s 35 off 14 quickfire supported Buttler well in piling runs on the board and the duo established another 53-run partnership in just 24 balls. In the 19th over, Hetmyer was cleaned up by Jasprit Bumrah and in the same over he got rid of dangerous Buttler. Then, in the final over of the innings Mills removed Saini and Riyan Parag on the mere scores of 2 and 5 respectively. For MI, Burmrah and Mills scalped three wickets apiece while Pollard got one.
