India Open: Sindhu, Chaliha Enter QF; Sameer Retires

New Delhi, Jan 13: Former world champion PV Sindhu on Thursday reached the quarter-final of India Open here at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall.

Sindhu registered straight sets 21-10, 21-10 win over compatriot Ira Sharma in the round of 16.

The ace shuttler will be up against her Indian counterpart Ashmita Chaliha, who outplayed Yaelle Hoyaux of France 21-17, 21-14 in the second round contest.

Chaliha, who is the 2019 South Asian champion, had caused an upset by defeating fifth seed Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya in the preliminary round.

In other matches, Sameer Verma retired mid-way due to calf injury in the men’s singles round-2 clash against Canada’s Brian Yang.

In mixed doubles, Siddharth Jakhar and Megha Morchana suffered 6-21, 11-21 defeat at the hands top seed pair of Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia.

Another mixed pair of Venkat Gaurav and Juhi Dewangan defeated 21-16, 21-23, 21-19 their Indian counterparts Sanjai Srivatsa and Pooja Dandu and stormed into the quarterfinals.

Men’s doubles pair of Bhaskar Chakraborty and Kapil Chaudhary went down 17-21, 9-21 to top seed Indonesian duo of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan

Moreover, eleven matches were called off on day three as seven Indian shuttlers withdrew from the tournament after testing positive for Covid-19.
