Barca Women Thrash Madrid In Front Of Record Crowd

Barcelona, March 31  : FC Barcelona on Wednesday set a new record for the attendance at a women’s football match when 91,553 fans filled the Camp Nou Stadium for the return leg of Women’s Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid. Wednesday’s attendance beat the previous record of 90,185 supporters, who watched the final of the 1999 Women’s World Cup between the United States and China. The Camp Nou has a capacity of 99,354, although a part of that is set aside for visiting fans. The evening was a triumph for Barcelona as the reigning European champions won 5-2 on the night to secure an 8-3 aggregate win on the back of their 3-1 win in Madrid a week ago. Barcelona overcame a shock early in the second half before securing their ultimately comfortable win. After Maria Leon put Barca ahead in the eighth minute, before Olga Carmona leveled from the penalty spot, and early in the second half Claudia Zornoza put Madrid ahead with a spectacular 35-meter shot. That goal sparked Barca into life and Aitana Bonmati equalized just four minutes later, before Claudia Pina put them ahead in the 55th minute. Alexia Putellas added a fourth in the 62nd minute and Caroline Graham-Hansen rounded off the scoring with 20 minutes left to play.
