Senior SP Leader Ahmad Hasan Passes Away
Lucknow, Feb 19: Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council Ahmad Hasan passed away at Lohia hospital here after prolonged illness on Saturday. He was 88.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and the party have condoled Ahmad’s demise and paid their tributes to him. According to family sources, the senior SP leader was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of a broken hip, where he later contracted corona. “He was later shifted to Lohia hospital where his health deteriorated and he passed away. Last rites will be performed at Hasan’s native village Jalalpur tomorrow,” they said.

He is survived by two sons, four daughters and wife, who is also hospitalised. Hasan took a plunge in politics after retiring from the police force as DIG in 1992. “He joined politics in 1994 on the insistence of SP patron Mulayam Singh Yadav,” a party leader said. He joined the police as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and served for over 30 years. Born on January 2, 1934 in Ambedkar Nagar district, Hasan received his early education under the tutoring of his father Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Jalalpur who was considered as one of the leading scholars of his time. He cleared UPSC in 1958 and became an India Police Service (IPS) officer. Hasan received several medals and honours during service period.
