Amethi, Feb 23: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday promised to end the menace of stray cattle in Uttar Pradesh if her party was voted to power. Campaigning in Amethi, the former seat of party leader Rahul Gandhi which he lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019, she addressed public meetings at Jagdishpur and Gauriganj and also did door-to-door campaigning.
“The Congress government in Chhattisgarh has done a lot of work to control stray animals. Modiji also talked about it and copied the same model. However, our government has successfully demonstrated how the issue can be resolved,” she said.
“Our (Chhattisgarh) government started buying cow dung at Rs. 2 per kg. Initially people laughed at us that the government is buying dung… That cow dung was given to self help groups and vermi compost was done. People started taking care of stray animals,” she said. Priyanka Gandhi also said that a compensation of Rs 3,000 per acre will be given to farmers whose crops are destroyed by stray animals. She said procurement price of wheat and paddy will be increased to Rs 2,500 and sugarcane would be bought at Rs 400. “We are working to empower you. The Yogi government did not allow the progress of the people for five years. Inflation has increased so much that a bottle of mustard oil costs more than the daily wages. I have heard that after the elections, prices are going to increase again,” she said.
