Kendrapada (Odisha), April 3 : Two persons, including a farmer’s body leader, were arrested in Odisha’s Kendrapada districton Sunday in connection with the alleged thrashing of a Tehsildar, police said. Pattamundai Police station Sub Inspector Anantarayami Biswal, who is also the investigating officer of the case, said Dolagobinda Sahu, the Kendrapada District co-ordinator of Naba Nirman Krushak Sanghathan (NNKS) and Udaybhanu Sahu, a farmer of Kanipal village under Pattamundai Model police station. were arrested for allegedly thrashing the Tehsildar on Saturday.
Both the accused were booked under various Sections of the Indian penal Code including those related to attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing hurt, obscenity, etc and produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court, Pattamundai. The court remanded them to jail custody after rejecting their bail. Theincident occurred when the Tehsildar, Dillip Kumar Sethy, was giving byte to some electronic media over the illegal brick kiln operating under Bada Mohanpur Gram Panchayat. Dolagobinda and Udaybhanu allegedly entered the premises and misbehaved with the Tehsildar for “failing to take action” against the illegal brick kiln manufacturing units . Later, an altercation erupted between the Tehsildar and the irate farmers.
Things took an ugly turn after the accused allegedly thrashed the Tehsildar. Sources said illegal brick kiln manufacturing units were operating near the farmlands of the local farmers during the last few days under the very nose of the local administration. But the Tehsildar took no steps to restrict unauthorised brick kiln units , The farmers of Kanipal and Bada Mohanpur earlier in a memorandum had demanded the Tehsildar take stern action against the unauthorised brick kiln owners and destroy the illegal brick kiln units in their locality. The villagers even staged a dharna in front of the Pattamundai tehsil office recently in support of their demand. The agitators withdrew their agitation after the Tehsildar assured them he would take action in this regard. But the Tehsildar did not take any steps. Suspecting a nexus between the Tehsildar and the brick kiln owners, the accused allegedly misbehaved with the Tehsildar. Police swung into action after the Tehsildar lodged an FIR against the accused.
