Odisha Panchayat Polls: Note The Dry Days, Curbs On Bars & Restaurants

Bhubaneswar, Feb 7: Excise Commissioner on Monday directed district collectors and magistrates of Odisha to declare 48 hours preceding Panchayat elections as ‘dry days’. This is to check allurement of voters through alcohol, by candidates.

This order also stated to be applicable on the voting days and days of re-poll if any.

No liquor shops, hotels, restaurants, clubs and other establishments will be permitted to sell/serve wine on these days. This is also applicable to non-propriety clubs, star hotels/restaurants and even those issued different categories of licence for possession and supply of liquor.

Individuals have been barred from storing liquor during this period. They have also been asked to take steps to prohibit the sale of liquor in the areas adjoining the wards and intensify raids to avert liquor-related issues.

The Panchayat polls will be held in five phases between February 16 and 24. The counting of votes will be held on February 26, 27 and 28.

Dry days are as the sale of alcohol is not permitted on these specific days. As per stipulated norms of government most of the Indian states observe these days on major national festivals and occasions such as Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) along with during elections in India.

Dry days can vary according to a state’s public holidays and festivals.
