Odisha: NHRC Seeks ATR On Electrocution Of Minor Hockey Players

Kendrapada, June 7: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought Action Taken Report (ATR) from Sundergarha Superintendent of Police and Odisha Energy Department Secretary on the unfortunate incident of two minor hockey players electrocuted in Sundargarh district of Odisha.


Acting on a petition filed by Human Rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC passed the order June6 last,Tripathy in his petition stated that two minor hockey players , Sujjal Ekka(15) , of Pandratoli Kukuda village and Birendra Kujur ( 17), of Jhagarpur village died due to electrocution in Sundargarh district while returning after playing a Hockey match.


They came in contact with the live electricity wire on May 3 as an electricity pole had fallen down on the road in Gariamal village under Rajgangpur block in Sundargarh district. Tripathy, the petitioner , alleged that the negligence of the electricity department was the reason behind the death of two budding hockey players and requested the Commission to intervene into the matter.


The NHRC in its order sought an ATR from the Principal Secretary, Department of Energy, Government of Odisha and the Superintendent of Police, Sundargarh, Odisha in this matter within 4 weeks.
The Commission shall be constrained to invoke coercive process u/s 13 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 calling for a personal appearance of the authority concerned for submission of the report, in case the report is not received within the stipulated time,NHRC Said.
