Odisha: Annual Bird Census Commences, Team Counts Winged Guests
Bhubaneswar: The annual bird census at Chilika Lake,kicked off from today in five ranges under the Chilika wildlife division- Tangi, Rambha, Satapada, Nuapada, and Chilika. The annual bird census has begun from 6 am and will continue till 11 am.
As many as 21 teams comprising 105 forest department officials have started the annual bird census at Chilika from 6 am and will continue till 12 pm , here today.
According to sources, the surveyor team include officials of Chilika Development Authority (CDA), experts from Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Wild Odisha, Frow With Nature, Elephant Trust and members of various social organisations.
Earlier on Monday, a training program for the enumerators was held at the Wetland Training and Research Centre, Chandraput, near Balugaon, where the bird enthusiasts from different organizations took part. By October month, more than 62 species of birds had already arrived in Chilika including Peregrine Falcon, Grey Heron, Gadwall, Plinten, Billed Duck. The arrival of other species was delayed this year due to the low pressure and cyclone in the Arabian Sea.
Millions of birds species had started arriving from all over the world to the Queen of natural beauty, Chilika. Chilika has become the nest for all native and exotic species of birds and as a result, it has become like a color palette to the tourists.
