Bhubaneswar: The consultative group of experts of Geographical Indications (GI) Registry, Chennai, is to meet authorities from Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology (OUAT) who had filed an application seeking GI tag for Kai (ant) chutney. The application had been filed by OUAT in 2020.

Kai or red weaver ants are abundantly found in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha throughout the year and are also sold in the local bazaars wrapped in leaves of saal tree. These ants are quite a delicacy in the district. Eaten raw or in the form of a chutney, these ants are an important part of the tribal culinary habit.

Reportedly, preliminary examination of Kai chutney for GI tag has been completed. Based on recommendations of the consultative group and after necessary compliances to conditions, the application will be accepted and published for public to file opposition. If no opposition is received, the GI will be registered.
