World Earth Day, It Needs To Be More Than The Largest Civic Day Only

By D N Singh

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.” – the above line from the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, is all that can sum-up about today when we commemorate the Mother Earth Day.

An awareness which was accepted by the world about 52 years back when the signs of the decay of the environment were noticed. Not to be precise, but by then many damaged were done to the environ we live in.

In 1970 April 22, the consciousness was injected towards ‘Invest in Our Planet’ and the aim was to safeguard the world from being consumed by gradual yet rapid deterioration in its bio-diversity.

Unfathomable increase in pollution, global warming, and mindless deforestation, which harm the environment and result in the destruction of the planet can be an old slogan, but its impacts are manifest everywhere.

The objective of World Earth Day 2022 is ‘Invest In our Planet’ calling for businesses to shift towards sustainable practices. Which mostly goes unheeded and uncared for. This movement is expected to change the business climate, the political climate, and how to take the safeguards for the protection of the climate. “Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods, ” says earthday.org. There cannot be more elaborate a warning than this.

History has it that, in 1970 there was a mammoth surge of awareness from the streets of United States of America on April 22, twenty million citizens of America marched through the streets voicing against the corroding environmental issues emerging from pollution of air, pollution of water, oil spilling and rapid deforestation and the movement drew the attention of several cities and became so impacted that, it became a cause for the world to take up.

From that day it all started and World Earth Day became a slogan and still is a slogan in essence. Summits and conclaves have not been able to check the pace of deterioration.

It becomes a buzz, of course, when the day comes and political and other celebs play the reminder role.

It is time the slogan becomes a reality than merely being the largest civic event of the world.
