 By D N Singh

“Dil Dhoondta Hai, hai phir wahi, phoorsat ke raat din’, from the front yards of a ‘haveli’ in a village, to the roof-top, gazing stars, lying on a white apron under the vast firmament in summer nights, to the surreal mountain peaks where one breathes elixir of leisure, a mindboggling fusion of Gulzar’s lyrics and life breathed by an irreplaceable voice of Bhupinder Singh, today the sparkle is missing from the galaxy of voices those ruled over million hearts.

King of crooning classics, Bhupinder Singh, a name which reigned over gazal circles, can never be heard again.

Bhupinder, the synosure of great Gulzar’s quest, died due to health complications. The tonal gravity, texture and unimitable voice all came to the great singer who once was a reluctant musician in his early days.

It was for Madan Mohan who spotted the gem seated in his throatal regime and called him to Mumbai.

‘Nazm atki hui hai shine mein… and it did not last long , the popular guitarist Bhupinder soon became a house hold voice, chasing music through the undulations of Mumbai city and soon the young man from Amritsar had his name tagged with all time greats like Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood and many.

Bhupinder had created a niche for himself and which made him stand apart with a class of his own and a style different than many.
