Namaz: SC To Hear Contempt Petition Against Officials
New Delhi, Jan 31 : The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a contempt petition filed against the authorities in Haryana for their alleged failure to prevent violent incidents around Friday prayers in public parks of Gurugram. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana allowed a petition filed by former Rajya Sabha MP Mohammad Adeeb to be filed before the appropriate bench. Senior advocate Indira Jaising sought early hearing on the petition under ‘Special Mention’ and gave arguments to back the need for need for a quick hearing.
Adeeb in his petition has demanded action against Haryana Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal and Director General of Police P.K. Aggarwal. These top officials were accused of complete inaction in curbing communal and violent tendencies, he said. In December, the Haryana government banned Friday prayers for Muslims in Gurugram’s public parks following protests by local residents. The former MP has claimed in his petition that the Muslim community did not encroach upon any land for Namaz. They offered prayers only after getting permission from the competent authorities.
