Bangladesh Extends Its Envoy’s Tenure In India

Dhaka, Jan 15: The Government of Bangladesh has extended the tenure of Mohammad Imran as the High Commissioner (HC) to India by three years.

Imran was appointed by the government on February 27, 2019 as the HC of Bangladesh in New Delhi. The renewed term will be effective from February 26, 2022.

After almost a decade, a professional diplomat from Bangladesh has taken over as the HC to India. Prior to joining India, he was the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates.

Imran succeeded Syed Moazzem Ali in India. Former Foreign Secretary Ali has been acting HC to India since September 2014.

Former diplomat Tariq A. Karim was Bangladesh’s HC to India from 2009 to mid-2014.

Imran, an officer of BCS (Foreign Cadre) 1986 batch, obtained MBBS degree from Mymensingh Medical College. Prior to UAE, he served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan. Besides, Imran was the Deputy HC of Bangladesh in Calcutta.

After joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he served in various capacities in Dhaka as well as in the Bangladesh Mission in Jeddah, Ottawa, Bonn and Berlin.

He was the Director General of the South Asia Desk during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India on January 10, 2010.

Based on the visit, Bangladesh-India bilateral relations are moving forward anew which is still ongoing.
