UK’s Wolverhampton Gets First Black Mayor In 200 Yrs
London, May 18: For the first time in about 200 years, UK’s Wolverhampton has got its first black person as its Mayor.
According to BBC, Councillor Sandra Samuels OBE is the first politician of African Caribbean heritage to hold the post in 200 years and the 11th female mayor of the city.
She will take charge from Councillor Greg Brackenridge when councillors take a vote at Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday.
“It will be my life’s greatest honour,” she said, adding that she hopes to be an inspiration for underrepresented groups so that they can “believe in themselves and know that anything is possible”.
“This is why the theme for my year in office will be ‘Dare to Dream’ – it’s the ability to hope and desire a better future,” she pointed out.
Last year, UK’s Liverpool city got its first black woman Joanne Anderson as Mayor.
