NATO Gears Up : Biden Meets European Leaders On Ukraine Issue

Washington, Jan 25 : US President Joe Biden and the European allies held a meeting to discuss reinforcing security on the NATO’s eastern flank to counter Russian invasion into Ukraine. The virtual meeting on Monday was attended by leaders of the European Commission, European Council, NATO, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom.

According to the White House, the leaders discussed their joint efforts to deter further Russian aggression against Ukraine, including preparations to impose massive consequences and severe economic costs on Russia for such actions as well as to reinforce security on NATO’s eastern flank.

“The leaders underscored their shared desire for a diplomatic resolution to the current tensions and reviewed recent engagements with Russia in multiple formats,” the statement said. Earlier, the Pentagon announced that Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin had put around 8,500 US troops on “heightened alert” for rapid deployment to assist NATO if needed. On Monday, several countries issued warning to their citizens in Ukraine over tensions at Russia-Ukraine border. The US issued a travel advisory to its citizens and urged them to leave Ukraine amid security concerns
