Two decades of wait for justice, Bilkis now gets a sigh of relief as accused roam free

The news that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition regarding the Bilkis Bano case an incident which had shaken the conscience world over has now come back.

 

It was an incident in 2002 when Gujarat riot took place and in its aftermath Bilkis Bano was gang raped by eleven persons and in which several of her family members were killed.

 

But the then Gujarat government gave remission to the eleven accused and they became free citizens rattling the sentiments of many Indians let alone that of Bilkis Bano who has been fighting for justice since two decades.

She has been running from pillar to post for those years just to know what made then Gujarat government to see so much virtue in them that they were exonerated.

Even as on date, many legal luminaries wonder at the step taken by the State despite all those happened with Bilkis Bano.

 

Even the judiciary made her wait for the hearing as the latter was busy with many cases. On August 25, the top court had sought responses from the Centre and the Gujarat government to a petition challenging the remission granted to the 11 convicts in the case.
The court had issued notice on a plea filed by CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali, journalist Revathy Laul and activist Roop Rekha Rani.

It had asked the petitioners to implead the 11 convicted persons, who have been granted remission, as parties in the matter.

Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five-month pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the riots that broke out after the Godhra train burning incident. Her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members killed.

The 11 men convicted in the case walked out free from the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.
