Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu), June 5 : In a tragic incident, seven girls were drowned while swimming in a check dam across River Gedilam at A.Kuchipalayam near Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the girls hailing from Kuchipalayam and Ayan Kurunjipadi villages went to the check dam to take bath. However, while swimming, they went into the deeper portion of the dam and subsequently drowned one by one.
The deceased were identified as R.Priyadarshini (15), her sister R.Divyadarshini (10), A.Monisha (16), S.Sankavi (16), M.Navaneetha (18), K.Priya (18) and M.Kumutha (18).
The locals along with personnel of the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department retrieved the bodies and sent them to Cuddalore government general hospital for post-mortem.
Nellikuppam police have registered a case and investigating.
