Purba Burdhaman, Jan 29: A sixty-year-old patient was burnt alive when a fire broke out in the Covid-19 ward in West Bengal’s Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital on Saturday, police said. The fire broke out at around 0430 hours on Block No 6 at a Covid-19 ward where Sandhya Mondal, a resident of Boromuria village of Galsy police station, was killed.
Hospital sources said altogether four pandemic patients were in the ward, which has now been sealed. The remaining three patients have been shifted to an isolated ward in the hospital. The ward was sealed immediately after the fire brigade personnel extinguished the flames within half-an-hour.
A team of forensic experts is expected to examine the causes of fire, hospital sources said. Eyewitnesses said the fire was first noticed at around 0430 hours by a patient, who woke up others to combat the flames. The patients bed was covered with a mosquito net and he was on oxygen support.
