Where an infant is not spared: Rapid and rarest punishments can be the only deterrents to such crimes

By D N Singh

An hour does not pass without an incident of rape or gang rape is not reported in the media. And some of them are of most horrific in nature which cannot be condoned by any conscience under the sun.

It does not stop, nor any sign of that. The only remedy that is visible as a deterrent is punishment of exemplary nature and that too as rapidly as the pace of the incident.

If required the laws can be amended but a victim cannot be left to the languor of the judicial procedure where trials and evidences, and witness like hurdles let the wounded singe under pains and humiliations or deaths in many cases.

En number of examples in the recent years and each day can be cited but the instances of punishment are very, very rare, slipping away from the clutches of law and get entangled in languid course of dates.

From Nirbhaya to this date, be it the case of Shraddha Walkar or innumerable instances of rape and murder are on the increase. The only thing which never scares the perpetrators is the tardy pace of law.

Exemplary punishment in public is the only panacea and nothings else can create the fear psychosis among the perpetrators not to indulge in such ghastly crimes.

They even, as a few recent reports suggest, are not sparing the babies and infants. Can the social fabrics of any democratic structure like India remain in tact if such crimes are let to relax in the neglects ingrained in the system.

No civilised nation can brook such beastly acts. Let’s imagine the case of Biklis Bano, which still dashes its head at the thresholds of the courts but it again remains in the contours of delay.

Today, there is a case of a minor who fell victims to eight accused came to the fore under the POCSO Act who was raped and raped by tem for hours and hours. Which is still in the cold storage of pendency.

Ten most horrific incidents in last one decade shook the nation’s conscience but not of the law keepers.
