NHRC seeks ATR on piercing of a javelin in the neck of a student in Odisha

Kendrapara,Dec 27 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed to the Bolangir District Magistrate to take appropriate action and inform the action taken report on piercing of a javelin in the neck of a student during annual sports events of a school.

The Javelin pierced through the neck of Sadananda Mehera (14), a 9th class student of Agalpur Boy’s high school during the Annual sports event on December 17 last.

Acting on a petition filed by Activist-Lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, in this regard ,the Apex Human Rights watchdog issued such direction on Monday and sought a report from the district magistrate within eight weeks.

Tripathy has alleged before the NHRC that due to negligence of school authorities and inaction of School and mass Education department ,the annual sports event has been turned to be a fatal when a javelin pierced through the neck of a class 9th student.

The seriously injured student was rushed to the Bhima Bhoi Medical college and hospital in Bolangir for treatment.

The accident, the petitioner said reflects the negligence by the school authority towards the safety and security of the students.

Javelin throw could be dangerous if it is not played with caution and under the supervision of the expert. The incident is the reflection of gross violation of human rights ,Tripathy stated before the NHRC.

In his petition, he urged the NHRC to order a proper investigation of the incident, give adequate compensation to the injured student and recommend the School and Mass education department to prepare guidelines for the safety and security of the students during annual sports day celebration.
