Smollett Sentenced To 150 Days In Jail
Washington, March 11: US actor Jussie Smollett has been sentenced to 150 days in jail for lying to police that he was a victim of racist and homophobic attack.
The sentence includes 30 months of probation and restitution of more than $120,000, according to CNN. On Thursday, the court also imposed a $25,000 fine on the actor for lodging the fake complaint.
While announcing the sentence, Cook County Judge James Linn said: “There’s a side of you that has this arrogance, and selfishness and narcissism that’s just disgraceful. “You’re not a victim of a racial hate crime, you’re not a victim of a homophobic hate crime. You’re just a charlatan pretending to be a victim of a hate crime, and that’s shameful,” the broadcaster quoted the judge as saying.
In January 2019, the actor had said that he was attacked by two assailants. He said the attackers hurled slurs at him and also threw a ‘chemical substance’ on him before tying a noose around his neck. Subsequently, the police launched the probe but did not find any substance in his claim.
In February 2020, he was booked on the charges of registering false police complaint. Police claimed that he had staged the attack.
