Morbi tragedy in Gujarat was a wake up call but the way the government there has handled things, post the incident, smacks of selective amnesia.
Fixing responsibility for an offence of this magnitude, the government has got nine people arrested and interestingly, among them no name of any district authorities worthy of a mention has come into the list of accused.
They are the two middle rung managers of the Oreva, who was assigned the repair of the suspension bridge, two ticket collectors, two sub-contractors and two to three security guards for their dereliction in handling the rush.
That puts a full-stop to the reactions post the tragedy, as of now. The intents and attitude of the state government reveals that, palpably, there are a lot of flies in the ointment but have been will fully ignored for the time being.
Not a single mention about any of the district’s top authorities under whom comes all such monitoring and ensure performance. Without whom no eye-lid can bat.
The district collector is an authority who commands over all the firmament of execution in the district. Hence, the repair of a suspension bridge as old as the one over Manchchhu river was not a culvert mending job.
What about the CEO of the Municipality and the Superintendent of Police. The latter also should be taken into the account. For it was a humongous gathering over a fragile suspension bridge for which three security guards have been made the scape-goats.
Because, it is the community of IAS and their equals who decide who all to be arrested.
