Philippines Update:Typhoon Rai Kills 75, Displaces More Than 3,00,000

Manila, Dec 19: Super Typhoon Rai killed at least 75 people after the devastating storm struck the Philippines on Thursday, the BBC reported here on Sunday.

With winds of about 195km/h (120mph) Super Typhoon Rai forced some 300,000 people to move to safer places when it hit the country’s south-eastern islands.

Aerial images of the worst-hit regions show extensive damage, even as communication with a number of areas remains cut off.

Arthur Yap, governor of the popular tourist destination Bohol, said on Sunday that he has been able to establish contact with less than half of the region’s 48 mayors after the storm.

Thousands of military, coast guard and fire personnel have been deployed in the country’s worst-affected areas to help in the search and rescue efforts.
