First case of COVID-19 detected in Olympic Village – Reports

Tokyo, Jul 17 : The first case of COVID-19 has been detected in the Olympic village in Tokyo, the NHK broadcaster reported on Saturday, citing the Organizing Committee.

The infected person is a member of one of the foreign delegations, there is no information about the citizenship and gender of the patient.

The committee reported a total of 15 new cases of the coronavirus, including the one in the foreign delegation, the Kyodo news agency said, noting seven are among the staff, six in delegations and two among journalists. Of these 15, eight infected people arrived from abroad and seven live in Japan.

Since July 1, the committee has recorded 45 cases of the coronavirus among people related to the Games, the news agency added.

The Summer Olympics in Tokyo, originally scheduled to take place in 2020, were postponed for a year due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is currently set to take place on July 23 through August 8 and be held without spectators due to the remaining risks of the virus.

In a bid to curb the spread of the virus, the Japanese government declared a new state of emergency in Tokyo since Monday. The emergency will last until August 22, including the entire period of the Olympic Games.
