High Court Seeks Status Report On Mamita Murder Case

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Thursday directed the state government to file the status report on the investigation into Mamita Meher murder case within a week.

After issuing the order, the High Court set the next hearing of the matter on December 3. Home Secretary, DGP, Balangir Collector, Balangir SP and Sindhekela police station IIC have been made opposite parties in the case. Earlier, Mamita’s father Suchandra Meher had filed a petition in the High Court seeking a time-bound impartial probe and trial in a fast track court.

Expressing displeasure over the investigation by police, the petitioner had alleged that delay in completion of the probe was putting mental pressure on his family members.

According to the police, the prime accused in the case, Govind Sahu, had confessed to have strangulated 24-year-old Mamita of Jharni village under Turekela block of Balangir district to death in his car on October 8.

Sahu also admitted that he had burnt and buried the body in the under-construction stadium of Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi district where Mamita was the teacher.

The remains of the body were exhumed on October 19 from the stadium along with an anklet, a chain and a half-burnt bag.
