SC Pressed To Act On Hate Crimes

New Delhi, Dec 31: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking its direction and order to the Union government and other authorities to constitute an independent committee to compile all complaints relating to hate crimes in the country.

The petitioner, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUIH) through its President Maulana Syed Mahmood Asad Madani, filed the petition. The Tripura Government and Delhi Police were also made respondents.

The petitioner has no other alternative efficacious remedy available other than to approach the Supreme Court.

The petitioner urged the court to find from the Union government action taken in relation to the hate speeches, more particularly targeting the personality of Prophet Mohammad, in the light of mandatory direction passed in the case of Tehseen Poonawala against the Central government.

The petitioner sought a direction to constitute an independent committee for compiling all complaints relating to hate crime.

It also sought directions for court monitored investigation of and prosecution fore hate crimes.
