New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said that Maharashtra police can continue with its probe on the FIR lodged against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, but no challaan (charge sheet) should be filed in court in those cases registered against him.
The Apex Court extended the interim protection granted to Singh, till January 11, 2022. A bench, headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and also comprising Justice MM Sundaresh, was hearing the appeal filed by Singh, challenging the probe initiated against him by the Maharashtra government.
Singh had moved the top court of the country, seeking its direction for relief and protection against his arrest in the alleged extortion case. The Bench said prima facie, it was of the view that the probe against the former Mumbai Police Commissioner should be investigated by some other agency and not by the state police.
During the course of hearing, Puneet Bali, lawyer for Singh, said that the state of Maharashtra, has filed a reply and the DGP has also filed a reply, but the reply of CBI was not on record yet. Singh is being investigated by the Maharashtra police for his alleged role in an extortion case.
The SC Bench on Monday granted one week time to CBI, the probe agency in the case, to file its response over Singh’s petition and fixed the matter for further hearing on January 11.
