Tea Breaks for Safety: Odisha’s Initiative to Reduce Nighttime Accidents

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has unveiled a novel initiative: providing free tea to drivers during the night on highways across the state. Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu announced this innovative approach, emphasizing its potential to prevent drowsiness-related accidents by offering drivers a much-needed break.

Under this initiative, free tea will be available to night drivers at roadside dhabas and hotels, with additional facilities provided for them to take rest. The government’s proactive step is a part of its broader strategy to address the challenges of nighttime driving and enhance safety measures on highways.

Identifying Suitable Locations

District Collectors have been tasked with identifying suitable eating joints where free tea can be served. This initiative not only aims to keep drivers alert and combat fatigue but also encourages responsible practices during night travel.

Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) Take Charge

To kickstart this initiative, regional transport offices (RTOs) will orchestrate the necessary arrangements, with a primary focus on the upcoming road safety week from January 1 to 7 next year. During this period, the provision of free tea is expected to serve as a pilot program, testing its effectiveness in promoting driver alertness and reducing the likelihood of accidents during nighttime travel.

Commitment to Road Safety

A recent meeting chaired by Commerce and Transport Department Principal Secretary Usha Padhee emphasized the need for increased traffic checking during morning and evening hours. Stringent actions will be taken against drunk driving, wrong-route driving, and other traffic rule violations. Padhee directed officials to intensify efforts to reduce accidents, especially during the road safety week.

Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Picnic Spots

Usha Padhee further directed the State Transport Authority (STA) commissioner to issue a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for enforcement at picnic spots, considering the ongoing picnic season. This reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring road safety not only on highways but also at popular recreational areas.

Health Camps for Drivers

In addition to the free tea initiative, RTOs have been instructed to organize health camps near roadside petrol pumps and hotels. These camps will focus on conducting eye check-ups for drivers, addressing an essential aspect of their well-being to enhance overall safety on the roads.
