Prime Minister Lays Wreath at National War Memorial on 50th anniversary of Vijay Diwas

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday laid a wreath at the National War Memorial on the occasion of Swarnim Vijay Diwas to remember the supreme sacrifices made by the Indian Armed forces in the 1971 war (Bangladesh liberation war).

Vijay Diwas is observed to commemorate India’s victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan and the Liberation of Bangladesh. The year 2021 is being observed as Swarnim Vijay Diwas to commemorate 50 years of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Modi also merged the four flames with the eternal flame at the National War Memorial that have toured all corners of India over the last year.

Last year on December 16, Prime Minister lit these four flames and since then these flames have traversed across the country. The flames were also taken to key battle areas, and also to the houses of the heroes of 1971 war.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the great valour and sacrifice by the Indian Armed Forces in the 1971 war.

Taking to twitter he said, “I recall the great valour and sacrifice by the Muktijoddhas, Biranganas and bravehearts of the Indian Armed Forces. Together, we fought and defeated oppressive forces. Rashtrapati Ji’s presence in Dhaka is of special significance to every Indian”.

On the occasion the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the three chiefs of Indian Armed forces were also present at the War memorial.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also remembered the courage and supreme sacrifice by the India army and remembered the 1971 war as the “golden chapter” in India’s military history.

“On the occasion of ‘Swarnim Vijay Diwas’ we remember the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces during the 1971 war. The 1971 war is the golden chapter in India’s military history. We are proud of our armed forces and their achievements” he tweeted.

He also shared a picture of “Instrument of Surrender” and said, “This day, that year!”.

Vijay Diwas is commemorated on December 16 to remember and honour war heroes of Indain Armed forces . This day reminds us of the 13-day-long Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, in which Indians celebrate the triumph of the Indian soldiers against Pakistan. The day also marks the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.
