Indian Coast Guard rescued 11 stranded fishermen from turbulent Bay of Bengal
Kolkata : The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has rescued 11 stranded fishermen after their fishing trawler developed a technical snag and went immovable in the turbulent Bay of Bengal near Sagar Island, official sources said on Monday.
The ICG, Kolkata headquarters, said that due to sudden weather changes causing a swell in the seas, it began warning fishermen against venturing out to the seas. During this, the ICG ships at sea received information about a stranded fishing boat stuck 35 nautical miles south of Sagar Island with 11 crew onboard.
The boat was reported to have an engine failure and was adrift in the area.
“Realising the emergency, the Coast Guard immediately launched a multifarious swift rescue operation. Coast Guard Dornier aircraft undertaking surveillance in the area were immediately diverted to locate the boat.”
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has appreciated the rescue operation. He said, “Appreciate efforts ICGS Anmol in rescuing 11 fishermen stranded due to engine failure of Indian Fishing Boat ‘MAA SHITALA’ 35 Nm south of Sagar Island in prevailing cyclonic weather.”
