Amid Omicron concerns, TMC MP demands booster vaccine doses to be started

New Delhi, Dec 14: Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday said the booster dose of Covid vaccination should be started, as cases of the new variant Omicron were increasing in the country.

Raising the issue in the Zero Hour, the AITC MP said, “The booster dose for Covid should be started in the whole country. Because of some difference in opinion of the expert committee, India has not started booster doses. Omicron has entered India…,” he said.

“Because of the problem of genome sequencing, it is not easy to find whether a particular patient is infused with Omicron. Yesterday, two well-known film artists have been infected with Covid – Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora, which is a matter of concern for all of us. I demand a third dose should start immediately and young people between 12-18, who have not received Covid vaccine so far, should also get it,” Roy Said.

He further said the UK has declared an Omicron emergency and has started giving booster doses.

“We all are scared that a third wave will happen, if it happens, we should not be caught unaware,” he said.

Delhi reported four new cases of Omicron variant in the national capital on Tuesday, pushing the city’s tally to six. All the new patients have taken both the doses of vaccines and shown mild symptoms of the viral illness.

“The government needs to be vigilant about the new Covid-19 variant Omicron and take more precautions. We have to be prepared to fight the new variant,” said Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, while raising the Omicron issue during the Zero Hour.

Other states that have reported Omicron cases include Maharashtra (20), Gujarat (4), Rajasthan (9), Karnataka (3), Kerala (1) and Andhra Pradesh (1) and Union Territory of Chandigarh (1).
