Bangladesh Prez Hamid, PM Sheikh Hasina pay tribute to Liberation War martyrs

Dhaka, Dec 16: Bangladesh President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday paid rich tributes to the martyrs of 1971 Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial at Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka.

The Head of the State placed the wreath at the altar of the National Memorial at about 6:30 am followed by the premier.

Sheikh Rehana, the younger daughter of country’s founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Prime Minister’s younger sister, also attended the ceremony.

After placing wreath, the President and PM stood in solemn silence for a while as a mark of deep respect to the memories of the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.

The contingent drawn from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force paid the State salute on the occasion, as the bugles played the last post.

Later, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and leaders of different political as well as socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths at the National Memorial.

The nation is celebrating the 51st Victory Day on Thursday as the country was liberated from the Pakistani forces on the day in 1971 after a nine-month long bloodstained Liberation War.
