South Africa crossed its Omicron peak: Reseachers

Cape Town, Dec 23: South Africa has surpassed the peak of its Omicron outbreak, senior researcher of the country said.
The country has “surpassed the peak of the Omicron wave now, driven by the significant decline in the populous province and epicenter: Gauteng,” CNN quoted Ridhwaan Suliman, senior researcher, as saying at the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on Wednesday.
Other provinces have also surpassed their peaks, Suliman added.
Earlier, Michelle Groome of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) told media that all signs indicate “that we’ve surpassed the peak of infections in Gauteng.”
The number of Covid-19 cases has decreased by 20.8 per cent in the African nation as of December 18, according to the NICD’s epidemiology brief.
The scientists in South Africa were the first to recognise the new variant in November raising the alarm for the rest of the world.
