Milind Soman’s wife says northeastern is considered Indian only after medal: Otherwise named ‘Chinky’ or ‘Corona’

Mumbai : With historic triumph of Mirabai Chanu in Olympics event, India is celebrating her homecoming. But amidst all of these glorious happenings, Ankita Konwar wife of Milind Soman pointed out the hypocrisy lying within people’s mind regarding North Eastern people. She shared that people from North-East India are considered Indian only after winning a medal. 

She wrote, “If you’re from Northeast India, you can become an Indian ONLY when you win a medal for the country. Otherwise we are known as “chinky” “Chinese” “Nepali” or a new addition “corona”. India is not just infested with casteism but racism too. Speaking from my experience. #Hypocrites” 

Ankita might be just 29 but she never shies away from speaking what’s on her mind. Sometime back, she made headlines after she gave a befitting reply to a netizen who questioned her about having kids. 

During an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, when a user asked Ankita, “It’s been years of ur marriage, wht do you think about family planning,” she replied, “We are planned family, next,” and added a smiling emoji.

Another user had asked her, “How did you tackle/ manage this Indian stereotype of ‘don’t marry an older man?” Replying to this, she had shared, “Anything that’s not common in a society, people usually like to talk about it. And it’s not just limited to India. We as a species, have a tendency to get weird about the unknown, the unexplored AKA fear. A survival skill. And sometimes we are not conscious enough to distinguish between the utility and the waste of that skill. I have always done what makes me happy.”

Ankita is an active social media user and began her career as cabin crew executive with Air Asia in 2013. She is also a talented sportswoman who completed her first 10,000 marathon with Milind Soman in 2015. In February 2018, she left her job as a senior flight attendant at Air Asia.
