Lucknow : Violence broke out on Monday outside the residence of Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav here after he was detained by police when he staged a sit-in for being stopped from visiting Lakhimpur.
During the violence, SP workers torched a police vehicle. Police had resorted to lathicharge on SP workers who were agitating as their leader was prevented from going to Lakhimpur, where nine people were killed on Sunday.
Later, Akhilesh Yadav, along with his supporters, was taken to Eco Park by police.
According to police sources, a Special Task Force (STF) will investigate Lakhimpur Kheri incident and around two dozen people are being investigated on the basis of a video that went viral.
So far, six people have been arrested and more are likely to be nabbed soon.
SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav, who attempted to escape from the police by climbing across the boundary wall of his residence, was detained near Engineering college crossing in Lucknow when he was attempting to go to Lakhimpur.
According to reports, RLD president Jayant Choudhury was also detained here at Zero point crossing on NH 24.
Meanwhile, the UP government has written to Punjab Chief Secretary urging not to allow anyone from the state to Lakhimpur Kheri, where Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed.
Trains conneting Bahraich and Mailani were cancelled on Monday due to the Lakhimpur violence.
Police has increased vigil on the Bahraich-Lakhimpur border.
