Djokovic Wins Court Battle Against Australia
Melbourne, Jan 10 : Tennis ace Novak Djokovic on Monday won the bid to remain in Australia after the judges ordered his immediate release from the immigration detention.
Judge Anthony Kelly has ruled that Djokovic’s visa cancellation order be “quashed” immediately, which means he can now enter Australia, BBC reported.
Earlier, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had refused to comment on Djokovic’s case but emphasised that rules are rules and it is for everybody.
“The federal government’s advice to Tennis Australia, that was set out very clearly in November. And I read the extract from this very podium. It could not be more clear,” Morrison was quoted as saying by CNN.
This comes just days after World No 1 Tennis player’s visa was canceled and he was sent to temporary detention as he did not have a valid medical exemption for the vaccination requirement for all arrivals, CNN reported.
The court documents stated that he had received medical exemption from Tennis Australia on December 30.
According to CNN report, Djokovic had recorded a Covid-19 infection on December 16 — which two independent panels agreed to be a good enough reason to delay Djokovic’s need to be vaccinated.
