‘Over 130 Ukrainians Killed Since Russia’s Invasion’
Geneva, March 1: At least 136 civilians, including 13 children, were killed and 400 injured since Russia invaded Ukraine, the United Nations human rights office (OHCHR) said on Tuesday.
OHCHR spokesperson Liz Throssell said, “Between February 24 morning and midnight last night, our Office has recorded 536 civilian casualties in Ukraine. These include 136 civilians killed, of whom 13 were children, and 400 civilians injured, among them 26 children”.
She said that most of these casualties were caused by the “use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, and air strikes”. “These are only the casualties we were able to cross-check, and the real toll is likely to be much higher,” she pointed out.
Earlier, The Guardian quoted NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg as calling out Russia to put an end to the war and withdraw its forces. She said, “the Russian assault is totally unacceptable and it is enabled by Belarus. “NATO is a defensive alliance, we do not seek conflict with Russia. Russia must immediately stop the war, pull all its forces from Ukraine and engage in good faith in diplomatic efforts.”
