Gopinath Swain: The Guardian of Krishna Leela Tradition
Gopinath Swain, a Krishna Leela artiste hailing from Ganjam district, has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the rich tradition of Krishna Leela singing. His commitment to traditional techniques, coupled with innovative methods, has bridged the gap between the past and the present. As a scion of a family of Krishna Leel performers, Swain has not only sung and taught five ancient ragas but has also established traditional village schools called Akhadas, where he imparts his extensive knowledge to numerous disciples. At 105 years old, his legacy is a testament to the enduring power of cultural preservation.
Bhagabat Padhan: Guardian of Sabda Nrutya Folk Dance
Bhagabat Padhan, an exponent of Sabda Nrutya folk dance from Bargarh, has dedicated over five decades to promote and popularize this dance form, considered to be the dance of Mahadev. The 85-year-old maestro has not only mastered the art himself but has also imparted his knowledge to more than 600 dancers, ensuring the continuity and vibrancy of Sabda Nrutya for future generations.
Binod Maharana: Shilpi Guru and Traditional Painter
Renowned as a Shilpi Guru, Binod Maharana is an eminent traditional painter based in Bhubaneswar. His work extends beyond traditional painting, as he has also ventured into the tempera medium. With accolades such as the National Award in 1974 and the Viswakarma Citation in 1983, Maharana’s artistic journey reflects a deep commitment to preserving and advancing the cultural heritage of Odisha.
Binod Kumar Pasayat: Literary Luminary from Sambalpur
A distinguished lyricist and dramatist from Sambalpur, Binod Kumar Pasayat has risen to fame with his literary contributions, particularly the iconic Sambalpuri play, ‘Mui Nai Mare’ (I will never die). Starting his literary career in Sambalpur, Pasayat has penned numerous Sambalpuri dramas and hit numbers for Odia films, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of the region. At 88 years old, his enduring impact on Sambalpuri literature and music is a testament to his literary prowess.
The Padma Shri awards, to be conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions in March/April, celebrate the exceptional achievements and commitment of these individuals, who have significantly enriched the cultural tapestry of Odisha and the nation as a whole.
