Breaking: 14 year old Alok’s death being crushed under a lift bares the dark underbelly of Law

Pensive wailing of a mother after losing her 14 year old son in a factory mishap can melt any heart. Fifth child of the family, Alok was working at a factory outside his school hours as an operator of a make-shift manually handled lift. Was that the age for such a young child to be engaged in such a job.
Alok has died in Delhi’s Bawana district and bereaved his entire family and specially the mother was inconsolable. The tragic incident took place on February 13 when Alok was literally crushed to death before people when he got trapped inside the lift shaft and could never be rescued. It was a heart wrenching to imagine even.
As per police complaint, it has been said that, it was a culpable offence not amounting to murder and negligent conduct as regards the machinery there, and the factory supervisor arrested, a report said.
It was later known that his mother was a daily-wager and on days he did not go to school accompanied his mother and subsequently engaged to handle the lift.
It was all being done at the instance of the supervisor against the will of his mother.
Alok’s case was not in isolation but hundreds like him are engaged in the industrial hub of Delhi and in many parts of the country against the Child Labour Act.
