Peak power demand on rise since September, 2020: Govt tells Lok Sabha

New Delhi : In what suggests pick-up in industrial activities, demand for electricity has been on the rise and peak requirement has been showing positive growth since September 2020, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday.

“From September, 2020 onwards, the peak demand had shown a positive growth over the same month of previous year. The peak demand in 2021-22 (upto June) as compared to previous year 2020-21 has also shown a positive growth,” Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh said in a written reply.

On whether peak power demand in the country during FY21 was 1.31 per cent lower than in the previous financial year, the Minister said that the peak power demand in the country during the financial year 2020-21 had not declined but rather increased by 3.5 per cent as compared to the previous financial year i.e. 2019-20.

“By the end of the financial year 2020-21, in January 2021, the peak demand in the country had not only recovered but with a peak demand of 190,198 MW, surpassed the previous year’s peak demand of 183,804 MW which, occurred during the year 2019-20, in the month of June, 2019,” he added.

The lockdown in the country had led to a decline in the peak demand, with the highest impact of 24.9 per cent decline in the month of April, 2020 as compared to corresponding figure of April, 2019. However, as the lockdown norms were gradually relaxed, the peak demand of the country started growing and had eased out to 5.6 per cent in August, 2020, over August, 2019.
