New Delhi, Jan 31 : Blizzard Entertainment has announced it has a new triple-A survival game in development for consoles and PC. Based in a new fantasy universe, it’s apparently been in the works for nearly five years. So given the amount of scandals Blizzard is surrounded in, it came as a huge shock when the company announced a new survival game for PC and consoles a few days ago. More so, it would seem that the new game seems untouched by the current wave of negativity surrounding the company. Nothing much was said about the title, just its genre, that Blizzard was hiring, and some highly conceptual art alongside it.
However, according to one insider, this isn’t the extent of Blizzard’s games in development with the studio apparently having even more up its sleeve. On The Xbox Two podcast, Rand al Thor 19 spoke Windows Central’s Jez Corden who had previously talked about Blizzard having several unannounced games in development. When asked if he had known that the new survival game was one of them, Corden replied, “No, it wasn’t. I was expecting them to announce a different game last week. I did not know about this one but I did know about another, which I’m not going to talk about because I don’t want to get anyone in trouble.”
“I’ve been told that Blizzard’s roadmap is very strong. That’s what I’ve been told basically.” Corden went on to further add that the company was at the stage of “appeasing the crowd” along with being aware of its numerous mistakes (Warcraft and StarCraft being the examples provided). Though initially skeptical of new head Mike Ybarra making an impact, Corden has heard from his contacts at Blizzard that there’s “a sense of optimism” that “hasn’t been there for years.” There is not much else to say about the first survival game in development at Blizzard. There are many design directions and mechanical aspects that could be taken with a survival game.
If Blizzard could recapture some of its former magic and deliver an incredibly polished, triple-A version mixing the best elements of a survival, then the project might end up being highly successful. After all, that was always the secret behind their biggest successes such as World of Warcraft. How things will ultimately play out, especially following the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard by Microsoft and concerns about consolidation, remains to be seen. Among its various new projects, Blizzard is still working on Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 which has faced various delays.
