New Delhi : All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla drawing his attention into the alleged vandalism at his official residence here earlier this week, and sought his intervention into the matter besides referring it to the ‘Committee of Privileges’ for a comprehensive investigation.
“This is not the first act of vandalism at my residence. Despite the previous attacks, the attitude of law enforcement agencies has been lackadaisical to say the least. Therefore, I request your intervention that the police take this matter seriously. This is essential to ensure improved security for me and my residence,” the Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad wrote in his letter to the Speaker on Thursday.
Stating that “this is contempt of the House” and “attack on the independence and majesty of the Parliament”, Owaisi said, “As custodianof the House, it is the duty of your office to protect the House, its members and officers. This is not an individual breach of parliamentaryprivilege alone, but an attack on the collective right of the Members of Parliament.”In addition to your intervention, I request the matter be referred to the Committee of Privileges for a comprehensive investigation,” he wrote.
Owaisi further said the intention of the attack was to intimidate him and prevent him from speaking his mind in the House. The MP had alleged that his official residence at Ashoka Road was allegedly vandalised by a group of men from ‘Hindu Sena’ on September 21. Delhi Police had arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the incident.
