After the wetland sites such as; Chilika and the Bhitarkanika sanctuary, now it has become the third spot in Odisha, Satkosia Gorge in Angul district designated with the Ramsar site. That makes Odisha to possess the tag as the 3rd such status.
Which makes a total of 64 such sites in Indian wetlands in states like Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Goa Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
Nestling at the picturesque Mahanadi expanse, interspersed with forests and hillocks, Satkodia is often more known for the Gharial crocodiles and their breeding.
Besides that, Satkosia has remained a safe home for the Royal Bengal tigers and myriad other species those who nourish in this fantastic sanctuary.
Being declared a wildlife Santuary in 1976, Satkosia has been waiting for long for being designated as Ramsar site.
The magnificent gorge almost neck-lacing the expanse of Mahandi river system, is a house to diverse flora and faunas including the beautiful Flying Squirrels some times lacing the skies above. Satkosia’s immense biodiversity makes it most magical due to the confluence of two bio-geographic regions of India; the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats, The Gorge wetland is also a mosaic of marshes and evergreen forests.
This time Satkosia is one among 10 such sites to have been designated as Ramsar site in India.
