IIT Kharagpur professor found hanging in campus
Kharagpur (West Bengal), June 29 : An Assistant Professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, was found hanging in her quarter on the campus of the eminent institution on Wednesday, police said.
The body of Swagata Bhattacharya, who joined as Assistant Professor of the Syama Prasad Mukhopadhyay Institute of Medical Science and Technology Hospital’s anatomy department last November, was recovered by the police by breaking open the door of her quarters. She was pronounced dead in hospital.
The medical college is within the IIT campus and affiliated with the premier institute in West Bengal’s
West Midnapore district.
The victim’s mother, who had returned from the market, raised an alarm and called the neighbours as her daughter did not open the door and even remained incommunicado over the phone.
Swagata, a resident of Tamluk in the East Midnapore district, had earlier worked in the SSKM Hospital for three years, and used to stay at Kharagpur with her mother.
“Investigation is on. We can’t say anything more than this now,” an IIT, Kharagpur spokesperson told UNI.
West Bengal Minister Soumen Mahapatra, who is the maternal uncle of the victim, called it a tragic incident. “I can’t see any reason why this happened. I will speak to the IIT authorities as also my sister,” she said.
