After the OBC Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament without objection, it gave states the freedom to make lists of backward classes. As a result, no one will be deprived of social and economic justice. BJD MPs have met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard and demanded that the 50 per cent reservation limit be lifted.
The Union Minister also appreciated the concern of the Odisha BJD MPs for increasing the reservation ceiling beyond 50% and for the Caste-based Census for the SEBC/OBCs.
The meeting was cordial and positive.
In states like Odisha, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other categories are exceeding the reservation limit by about 39 per cent, how to present a reservation of 27 per cent to OBC according to the bill. The Supreme Court’s constitutional bench has set a maximum limit of 50 percent. Therefore, in states like Odisha, only 11 per cent of OBCs can be benefitted. During the OBC Amendment Bill discussion in Parliament yesterday, it was demanded to remove the 50 per cent reservation limit. The Shiv Sena MP, along with the BJP, demanded this. Later today, the BJP MP met the Union Home Minister and handed over the demand letter.
